Here’s how Liverpool could line up if Sadio Mané stays next season. Reports indicate that Bayern Munich are yet to meet the asking price.
90min claim that Liverpool could keep Sadio Mané beyond this transfer window. It’s not as crazy an idea as it first seems, given Bayern Munich – the only supposed suitor – keep low-balling the Reds.
Bild claim the next bid coming in should be around £35m but that’s still likely too short for Liverpool. The Athletic believe the asking price is £42m and Bayern aren’t showing an ability to meet it right now.
We do think Mané will leave this summer as someone, surely, will find the cash. But what if he did stay? Let’s have a look at Liverpool’s potential lineup with the Senegal star in it.
How Liverpool could lineup if Sadio Mané stays
Should Mané remain on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp would have six world-class forwards to pick from. There would be Mané, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and now Darwin Nunez. We can’t imagine the Reds would stick with their 4-3-3, then.
If you’ve got that much firepower, throwing more numbers into attack makes sense. For one thing, it would be the best way to handle fixture congestion. Midfield, on the other hand, looks quite short – especially with reports that Liverpool won’t sign a new midfielder.
That’s despite both Thiago and Jordan Henderson struggling with fitness in recent years and both being past 30. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could leave, too. Perhaps cutting the midfield from three to two would help with rotation.
Liverpool could also play a strike-partner in and around Nunez – likely Mané. Linkup play is the Uruguayan’s one real weakness, says his former manager, and using a deeper striker alongside him helps that.
Thus we think Liverpool could lineup with a 4-2-4/4-2-3-1 formation, should Mané stick around. We’re still not sure he will – it feels very unlikely – but doing so could bring big changes to the team.
