Diogo Jota could lose his place at Liverpool if Sadio Mané remains with the club. There’s talk that the Reds’ no.10 could stick around.
90min claims that Sadio Mané could yet see out his Liverpool contract. Bayern Munich are yet to meet the Reds’ valuation and if they continue to fail, Mané could stick around.
It’s been a bit of an ordeal up to now as Bayern low-ball Liverpool with offers. The Reds want £42m, per the Athletic, but the first bid was £23.5m with £6.5m in add-ons. And those add-ons only triggered with Bayern lifted the Champions League for the next three years and Mané clinched a Ballon d’Or hattrick, too.
Liverpool, says the Athletic’s report, called the offer ‘laughable’.
And so things aren’t all that clear right now. Bild report that Bayern will make another offer of around £35m but that still falls short of the valuation. It’s becoming a very real possibility that Liverpool just don’t get a decent offer and keep Mané.
Should that happen, Diogo Jota might find himself in a tough spot.
Diogo Jota could lose his place
Jota had a strange season last time out. He scored plenty of goals – 15 in the Premier League – and was fantastic over the first half of the campaign.
Then Liverpool signed Luis Diaz and moved Mané centrally. Those are the two positions Jota plays, thus he found himself on the bench a lot post-January.
The respite there would be Mané leaving but as we’ve written before, Darwin Nunez arriving makes things difficult for Jota. He doesn’t have an obvious role in the starting XI right now and will have to fight for his position all over again.
And if Mané were to stay? Liverpool would have four players who all play either wide on the left or centrally. Jota, Diaz, Mané and Nunez. Assuming Jurgen Klopp goes with Darwin Nunez from the off – and his fee suggests he will – then Jota could be at the bottom of that list next season.
Things will be tough for him regardless but Jota really can’t afford for Mané to stick around.
