Report: Liverpool target Matthijs de Ligt now wants his release clause cut by £50m

Matthijs de Ligt wants Juventus to dramatically cut his release clause, according to reports. Liverpool supposedly want the player.

This comes from CalcioMercato. They claim that Matthijs de Ligt wants to cut his release clause considerably in any new contract with Juventus.

De Ligt’s contract expires in 2024 but teams can trigger a clause to get him this season for £107m. Next season, that clause jumps to £120m – something the player doesn’t want. And to be fair, Juventus don’t want it either.

They want De Ligt to renew his contract but he’ll only do so if the release clause drops all the way to £70m. He’s essentially asking for a £50m cut, then, to eliminate any risk of him leaving for free in 2024.

It’s something that will apparently interest Liverpool. They’re credited with interest here along with Chelsea but there’s no rush. De Ligt isn’t sure where he wants to play just yet and this one could drag on.

It’s an interesting one. De Ligt is undeniably a magnificently talented centre-back but he hasn’t always had things go his way at Juventus. In fact, he’s gone through some spells of very poor form.

But Dutch boss Louis van Gaal says De Ligt ‘rose from the darkness’ last season, showing the kind of talent he did with Ajax. There’s a suggestion that the young defender is going to become the player everyone thought he would.

So of course, Liverpool have an interest. Both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are beyond 30 now and the Reds must consider their future. Ibrahima Konaté is a part of that, certainly, but he’ll need a partner and Joe Gomez can’t stay healthy.

There’s little doubt that Konaté and De Ligt would be a sensational long-term partnership. And if the Dutchman truly can reduce his clause, it might not cost Liverpool all that much.
