Liverpool have now spent over £230m on forwards under Jurgen Klopp as Darwin Nunez joins the club. Here’s what they got for that money.

Darwin Nunez is a Liverpool player as the Reds spend a reported £64m on the Uruguayan from Benfica. That’s per the Athletic, anyway, who detail that the potential transfer if £85m. For now, though, it’s a £64m investment – the most Liverpool have spent on a forward under Jurgen Klopp.

It’s also now over £230m on forwards by our count since the German arrived. It’s a sizeable amount, though not quite as extreme as it sounds. This is Klopp’s seventh full season with Liverpool, meaning he’s now spent a little over £30m per campaign on forwards.

Obviously, that’s far more than most teams can spend – you could get two Jack Grealish’s for that with change! Still, we think Liverpool have done spectacularly well with that money. So let’s have a look at it.

Liverpool spending on forwards

Sadio Mané – £34m (BBC)

Liverpool spent £34m on Mané in Klopp’s first summer with the club. He’s been a sensational signing, going on to be one of the world’s best forwards and a club legend. One of the best we’ve seen at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah – £34m (BBC)

Klopp then went and signed Salah the next summer for a similar amount. You can essentially copy the above for this – an undoubted legend of the club and one of the very best we’ve seen. Perhaps even more than Mané.

Xherdan Shaqiri – £13m (BBC)

A very different kind of signing as Liverpool spent £13m to boost their squad depth in 2018. Shaqiri provided some wonderful moments, certainly repaying his fee. Never first-choice but a wonderful bench and rotation option.

Takumi Minamino – £7.25m (Sky Sports)

Similar to Shaqiri, Minamino arrived for his release clause from RB Salzburg to play a rotation role. He’s been very good at it, too, with limited appearances. Certainly, Liverpool win nothing this season if not for the Japan international.

Diogo Jota – £41m (The Guardian)

This was the first time Liverpool moved to interrupt their front-three of Mané, Salah and Roberto Firmino. It was a fantastic way to do it, too, as Jota has been a revelation since arriving from Wolves. There’s a very bright future ahead for the forward.

Luis Diaz – £37.5m (BBC)

So this one could eventually increase by around £12.5m if Diaz ticks all the add-on boxes. No one could possibly complain about that – the Colombian has been sensational since January. We can’t wait to see what he’ll bring next season as we’re all expecting even better.

Darwin Nunez – £64m (the Athletic)

Liverpool’s new star forward – and by far their most expensive. Nunez costs £30m more than Mané or Salah even before the add-ons. But we think it’s justified as the Reds future-proof their front line.
