Liverpool have announced Darwin Nunez and the squad number he’ll wear next season. The Uruguayan is officially a Red.
Darwin Nunez is a Liverpool player and will be for the long-term future. The Reds officially announced it on Tuesday evening and understandably, the player is thrilled.
“I’m really happy and delighted to be here at Liverpool. It’s a massive club,” Nunez told Liverpoolfc.com in his first interview.
It’s a massive signing for the club and, potentially, a record-breaking one. But really, this is about Liverpool investing in their future and changing the look of their side. The money Nunez costs is justifiable in that regard and we can’t wait to see what he brings.
After all, there’s a lot Liverpool can do with the player.
And they also announced the number that Nunez will do it all in. He’ll wear the number 27 next season – a change from the no.9 he wears for Benfica.
Darwin Nunez takes squad number 27
We had Nunez down as one of the five players who could take Sadio Mané’s no.10 this season but he’s not waiting around. Instead, he’s taking a very untraditional number.

As we say, that’s a departure from wearing the no.9 in Portugal but we think that’s actually relevant here. Roberto Firmino wears that currently and is out of contract in 2023. There’s little talk of a new deal, either, and it’s very possible that Nunez will wait this one out.
There’s a very good chance that 9 or even 11 becomes available in a year. He might even fancy that no.10 by then – Mané hasn’t left yet, after all.
So our expectation is that Nunez is taking a placeholder number here until one of the more traditional options is out there. We think he might be in that no.9 before too long.
