Pep Guardiola is now aiming to ‘lure’ Gavi away from Barcelona, despite claims that Liverpool have offered a contract to the teenager.
That’s according to The Mirror, who report that the Manchester City boss ‘won’t hesitate’ if Gavi’s contract talks break down.
The 17-year-old is currently locked in discussions with Barca, but is yet to agree a deal. Liverpool, PSG and Bayern Munich are reportedly ‘watching developments closely’ with City now ‘added to the mix.’
Several members of the City hierarchy – including Guardiola – have spent considerable time at Barcelona. Pep is claimed to have been ‘respectful’ of his former club when it comes to transfers in the past.
However, they are now reportedly ‘closely monitoring’ Gavi’s situation. The Spain international’s wage demands are said to be ‘no problem’ for both City and Liverpool.
Liverpool face competition for Gavi
There still looks to be every chance that Liverpool could eventually end up with Gavi this summer.
Rumours that a contract extension was imminent appear to have been wide of the mark. Until Barca are able to tie the midfielder down, his release clause – which is reportedly as low as £42m – will remain.
With just a year left on his deal, there’s even the possibility that Gavi walks away for nothing next summer.
That would be inconceivable from a Barcelona point of view. But if reports are to be believed, Gavi already has an offer on the table from a potential suitor.
As per Catalonian show La Porteria, Liverpool have offered the teenager four times what Barca are willing to. That would reportedly be a ‘star’ salary of over £9m per year.
Gavi’s stock has risen even further this week after some impressive performances, and a goal, for Spain.
Liverpool appear to remain in the running for an incredible young talent. If City do enter the race though, the allure of playing for Barca legend Guardiola may be too good for Gavi to turn down.
