'Fantastic for us': Liverpool coach says two players are a massive boost for the Reds' academy

Liverpool academy manager Alex Inglethorpe believes Neco Williams and Nat Phillips are ‘fantastic’ for the club. The two have been on loan.

Alex Inglethorpe, Liverpool’s Academy manager, gave a review of the Reds’ youngsters for Liverpoolfc.com on Saturday. There’s a lot to rave about, too, with so many senior debuts last season.

Inglethorpe also points out Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones – the pair are still in their early 20s but providing weekly for Liverpool. All in all, things are good.

And the coach is eager to mention those currently away from Kirkby, too. Neco Williams and Nat Phillips, he says, are benefitting the academy with the successes on loan.

The pair joined Fulham and Bournemouth respectively in January, each earning promotion back to the Premier League. It’s something that reflects well on Liverpool, says Inglethorpe.

“For the likes of Neco Williams and Nat Phillips to both get promotions with Fulham and Bournemouth having gone on loan, I think it is also fantastic for us,” he said. “The Academy doesn’t just mean what goes on in Kirkby.

“We have to remember that we have had a lot of players out on loan – whether that is Sepp van den Berg, Neco, Nat – and I’m really proud of all those players and how they have progressed.”

It’s undoubtedly a great look for Liverpool. The fact that their academy graduates can move on and thrive at decent teams only shows the strength that’s there outside the first-team.

That, in turn, will draw more attention to what’s going on at Kirky. Perhaps even convince more young players to move there. It certainly provides a wonderful example to those looking to loan or buy Liverpool players who aren’t in the spotlight.

Both Williams and Phillips will likely leave Liverpool this summer, after all. The Reds reportedly want £30m for the pair and if they get that, it’ll reflect magnificently on the academy once again.
