Report: News on Liverpool's Darwin Nunez pursuit is expected in the coming hours

Liverpool are expected to announce Darwin Nunez news in the coming hours, according to reports. The Uruguayan is their priority target.

This comes from O Jogo in Portugal. They claim that Liverpool and Benfica continue to grow closer to an agreement over a transfer.

In fact, the two teams have already come to terms on the amount. It’ll total €100m or around £85m – a club-record transfer for Liverpool. The only real sticking point is how it’s paid.

Benfica owe a lot of money elsewhere on this one. There are ‘intermediaries’ who get a percentage, Nunez’s former club Almería and agent Jorge Mendes, who brokered the deal.

Altogether, Benfica will only actually make around £31m profit on Nunez upfront. That has them wanting to make sure that any add-ons – around £17m of the deal – are genuinely attainable.

In other words, they don’t want the kind of add-ons that Bayern Munich offered Liverpool for Sadio Mané. Per the Athletic, Bayern offered £6.5m in add-ons that triggered if they won the Champions League in each of the next three seasons, with Mané willing the Ballon d’Or every year.

Liverpool called it laughable.

The Benfica deal, though, seems far easier to come to terms on. O Jogo believe we’ll hear definitive news ‘in the coming hours’ and that can only be good.

Liverpool to announce Darwin Nunez news

It’s about time to get excited, then. We think Nunez is worth the money – or at least, the price is justified – and Liverpool will get a fantastic player here.

This would be the most expensive incoming transfer in Liverpool’s history and one they can’t really afford to get wrong. After all, Nunez is the one to replace Mané next season – and possibly lead the attack after Mohamed Salah, should the Egyptian leave in 2023.

But Liverpool quite clearly see Nunez as something special. Let’s hope they get their man.
