£48m Liverpool star scored brilliant last minute winner for his country last night, teammates went wild

Liverpool’s Naby Keita scored a brilliant last minute winner for Guinea last night as they overcame Malawi 1-0.

Picking the ball up inside his own half, Keita played a nice give-and-go with Sehrou Guirassy before driving at the Malawi defence.

The Liverpool midfielder then cut back on himself and fired a ball into the chest of the striker. The heavy touch of his teammate serves as a nice lay-off for Naby, who collects the ball on the edge of the box.

Twinkle-toed as ever, Keita takes one touch to beat the defender and another to lash home a fierce shot into the roof of the net.

Cue wild celebrations as his teammates, the substitutes and coaching staff raced down the touchline to pile on Liverpool’s number 8.

It was a crucial goal for Guinea and gave them their first win of the AFCON qualifying campaign.

New contract for Naby

We’ve seen far too little of this Naby Keita in a Liverpool shirt. He’s had moments of similar class, but much too infrequently.

The man signed for £48m still has a lot to offer though. Still only twenty-seven, he looks to be in line for a new deal at Liverpool.

This should allow him the time to put together a couple of solid back-to-back seasons. Keita now looks to be over the issues that have hampered him throughout his time in England.

Last season was very encouraging indeed as he posted 40 appearances for the first time at Liverpool. Fingers crossed he can build on that next year too.

There’s a general feeling that the Guinean has never fully convinced for the club. Despite that, it feels like the right decision to give him the chance to turn these perceptions around.

Whatever his struggles on Merseyside though, he’ll always be a hero in his homeland. Captain and inspiration for his country, moments like last night only serve to enhance his legacy.
