Liverpool are now scouting 19-year-old defender Saidou Sow, according to reports. This is after a current player recommended him.
This comes from L’Équipe. They claim that Liverpool had scouts at a recent Guinea vs Egypt match in order to scout Saidou Sow.
The centre-back comes on recommendation from Naby Keita, his international captain. Liverpool quite clearly agree with Keita that Sow is worth keeping an eye on.
Sow is almost certainly available this summer after Saint-Ettiene suffered relegation to Ligue 2 this season. Indeed, the article claims that they’ll listen to the right offer as soon as it arrives.
If Liverpool like what they see, then, Sow could well be another through the door this summer.
Liverpool scouting Saidou Sow
Sow’s an interesting one as he barely featured over the second half of the season. Engaged in a relation fight, Saint-Ettiene only used the teenager twice in 2022.
But he did play more regularly over the first half the season and Sow managed 11 Ligue 1 starts for a total of 13 games. His stats from those games look good, too, when compared to other centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues.
His rate for pressures, interceptions and tackling all have him above the 85th percentile across his 989 minutes. In fact, he’s 90th percentile for the latter stat. Sow scored two goals, too, which actually has him in the very top per cent of goals per minute for centre-backs.
And so there’s a lot to work with here. Sow shows himself to be a very, very good pressing centre-back who can win tackles and threaten at the top end of the pitch. The fact he’s still only 19 suggests he has massive potential.
Liverpool don’t really have room for another centre-back right now but perhaps a buy-to-loan deal could happen. Sow clearly has talent and if Saint-Etienne are willing sellers, the Reds could pounce.
