Report: Boost for Liverpool over claims Manchester United are attempting to hijack their Darwin Nunez deal

Liverpool may not need to worry about Manchester United over Darwin Nunez, according to a report. The Reds lead the chase here.

This comes from Sport Witness. They claim that Manchester United have no met with Jorge Mendes about Darwin Nunez, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.

A source told them that there hasn’t been contact there and that Liverpool firmly lead the race here. The Reds are in talks with Benfica and a deal is progressing nicely.

United’s interest, then, is only theoretical – they haven’t actually made anything of it. If they want the player, they’re running out of time to get involved and would have to come up with a bid imminently.

As things stand, they’re losing out on precious time to Liverpool, who could end up sealing this one without competition.

Manchester United and Darwin Nunez

It’s obviously what you want to hear from a Liverpool perspective. While we do doubt that United could actually win this race, it benefits the Reds to bid without genuine competition. No one wants a bidding war – except for Benfica, of course.

And as we say, that’s likely all United could muster. Liverpool are the more successful team right now and can offer Champions League football. In fact, they can offer a legitimate chance of winning the competition as United prepare for the Europa League.

Liverpool also have a clear place in their squad for Nunez as Sadio Mané appears destined to leave. United, again, can’t quite match that as there’s little doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo will be their man-man as a centre-forward next season.

But it’s no secret that United like throwing money around and that was the true concern here. Liverpool will want to get this one done before they truly enter the race. The offer already looks like a club-record deal and while we think the Reds can justify that, they won’t want to pay much more for Nunez.
