'He was outstanding': International manager blown away by Liverpool player's performance for his country last night

Scotland manager Steve Clarke was blown away by how good Andy Robertson was for Scotland last night.

The Liverpool left-back played the 75 minutes as Scotland beat Armenia 2-0. And speaking via the Daily Record, Clarke was full of praise for his captain.

“I’ve got to mention the captain (Robertson),” said Clarke. “He was outstanding. He was outstanding in the dressing room before the game. Himself, John McGinn and Callum McGregor are leaders, taking us onto the pitch in a good frame of mind.”

The Liverpool man hasn’t always been universally loved as captain of his nation. But Clarke believes that Robertson is now growing into his role.

“It was three good performances from them but I thought the captain was exceptional,” he said.

“He’s just great in general. Being a captain and leader is something Andy has grown into. And it’s something which doesn’t get mentioned as often as it should do. Captains are important at this time in the dressing room. They are the ones people look to step up.”

An injection of youth

At twenty-eight, Robertson is now one of the senior members of the Liverpool squad. That will be further highlighted if all of The Reds’ summer business comes to pass.

Three players who have joined, or are expected to join Liverpool this summer are Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay and Darwin Nunez. Those three are aged nineteen, eighteen and twenty-two respectively.

Good news as Liverpool look to freshen up a slightly ageing squad. But it will need older heads like Robbo to settle them in.

Leaders for club and country

It’s great to have Liverpool players in such senior roles with their countries. All the experience that comes alongside that can only help them in their club football too.

As well as Robertson, Liverpool have Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah currently captaining their nations. Jordan Henderson is England vice-captain, while Ibrahima Konate has worn the armband for the French U21 side.

Throw in the experience of James Milner, as well as the seniority of Alisson Becker and Thiago Alcantara and you’ve got a team packed with nous.

As Robertson grows even further into his role, expect to see his influence on and off the pitch for Liverpool increase too.

Henderson still has three years to run on his contract, but Jurgen Klopp should have one eye on who can succeed him as Reds captain. When the time comes, Robertson’s name will be firmly on the list.
