Report: £140k-a-week Liverpool player now has contract offers from four different clubs

James Milner is set to put pen to paper on a new one year contract extension with Liverpool.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Milner had four clubs to choose between, including Liverpool.

These offers reportedly came from two Premier League clubs as well as an MLS franchise. The other proposals to Milner are described as being ‘more lucrative’ than the one presented by Liverpool.

Despite this, Milner has reportedly chosen to extend his stay at Anfield into its eighth year. The wage cut taken by the 36-year-old is claimed to be ‘significant.’

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been key to the midfielder extending at Liverpool. Klopp is said to have ‘spelt out’ to Milner and Liverpool owners FSG that the player will be ‘essential’ to any continued success at the club.

Great news for Liverpool

In a summer of potential upheaval, this is really good news for Liverpool.

The makeup of the dressing room looks set to change with the losses of stalwarts like Divock Origi and Sadio Mane. Adding Milner to that list would have possibly been one loss too many.

His influence on the pitch may have waned, but he continues to set the standards for his teammates off it.

Klopp has repeatedly spoken of how the Yorkshireman makes his life easier. It will delight the boss to know that he can count on his vice-captain for another year at least.

Eight years a Red for Milner

It’s to Milner’s enormous credit that he’s set to turn down higher wages to stay at Liverpool. There was always going to be some come-down from his current £140k-a-week salary. Given the amount of games he plays, that was never feasible.

But who’s to say other teams wouldn’t have offered him near that sum. Despite his advancing years, Milner is still more than capable of playing a bigger role than he currently has for Liverpool.

His love for the club and the manager is plain to see. It looks as though we’ll be back in this position again in a year’s time, but Milner’s story at Liverpool is set to continue for the time being.

Let’s get one of the big ones in the bag next season and send him off as the legend that he is!
