Liverpool already have their Sadio Mane replacement sorted and last night proved exactly why - RTK View

Diogo Jota last night showed exactly why he can be Liverpool’s replacement for Sadio Mane next season.

Mane’s potential departure this summer has dominated headlines since the Champions League final last weekend.

Most Liverpool fans have come to accept the end of Mane’s six-year association with The Reds. Now, talk has turned to finding the right replacement.

Luis Diaz is comfortably settled in the 30-year-old’s formerly favoured left-sided slot. As a result, Liverpool are reportedly after a new striker to replace their number 10.

There has been talk of Darwin Nunez, Robert Lewandowksi, or even Harry Kane. But for all that, Liverpool may already have the answer right under their nose.

Jota back in form

After such an excellent first-half of the season, Jota’s form dipped off after the turn of the year. Both in terms of goalscoring and general all-round play, the 25-year-old didn’t look quite at it.

That poor form has made it easy to forget just how lethal he had been for Liverpool up until that point.

Last night whilst playing for Portugal, Jota gave a good reminder of what he can offer whilst playing through the middle.

The first of his two assists was a masterclass in forward play. Receiving the ball deep in the penalty area, Jota pulled the goalkeeper out of position, turned the Swiss defender and laid off a perfect pass for the onrushing Cristiano Ronaldo to blast home.

His second was a good example of his ‘fox-in-the-box’ instincts. Hanging out in exactly the right area between two defenders, Jota controlled a fierce ball from Nuno Mendes before stabbing at goal with his left foot.

Only a smart save from the ‘keeper prevented Jota getting on the scoresheet himself. Ronaldo then swept home the rebound for his second of the game.

One of the best poachers around

His poor form towards the end of last season shouldn’t detract from the fact that Liverpool already have one of the best poachers in the game within their ranks.

It may well be that Liverpool do end up signing a new player to lead the line next season. Regardless, expect Jota to keep chipping in with crucial goals whenever he’s called upon to do so.

Portugal have two more games to play over this week. If Jota can keep proving himself capable of being the focal point for a very good team, maybe talk of the need of a replacement for Sadio Mane will start to die down.
