'They have just failed': Arsene Wenger reacts to Liverpool losing the Champions League final

Arsene Wenger has said that Liverpool deserve credit for their season despite missing out on the Champions League and Premier League.

Speaking post-game to beIN SPORTS, Wenger took the time to praise The Reds after their defeat to Real Madrid.

“Hats off to Real Madrid, but I would first like to give some credit to Liverpool as well,” said Wenger. “Because they have gone for all the trophies they can go for and they just failed.

“It’s true, in the two biggest ones, but just by a yard, you know, they have been exceptional as well.”

The Reds can hold their heads up high after a stunning season came right down to the wire. But they’ll rue that the two biggest prizes slipped through their fingers.

Liverpool come up just short

There will no doubt be some pleasure taken from Liverpool’s rivals over The Reds coming so close and missing out.

Wenger is right, though. What Liverpool have achieved this season has still been nothing short of incredible. To play every single game in a season at the very highest level is outstanding.

In a game of tight margins, Liverpool just didn’t get the luck. Madrid ground them down and ground them out and The Reds came up against a goalkeeper in exceptional form in Thibaut Courtious.

It doesn’t feel like it now, but Jurgen Klopp’s squad will in time reflect on this season with immense pride.

Despite that, there’s some disappointment that Liverpool made it to three cup finals this season, and didn’t score in a single one.

Yes, two of those finals ended in victory, but it’s a slight worry nevertheless.

It’s tricky to be critical of a team who have scored in nearly every single game this season. But to fail to score in the three biggest ones is something that Jurgen Klopp and his team will be no doubt pore over.

For now, it’s time to lick wounds and prepare for a big summer ahead. There’s hurt tonight, but also pride in what a fantastic season these boys have delivered. We’ll be back.
