Journalist claims Sadio Mané has 'unexpected' low wage demands but Reds look likely to lose him anyway

Sadio Mané really doesn’t have very high wage demands, according to one journalist. And yet, Liverpool could still lose the player.

This comes from journalist Florian Plettenberg. He claims that Bayern Munich were surprised by how cheap Sadio Mané could be this summer.

And cheap in every way. The Bavarians believe they could pay around £42m to sign him and that Mané wants around £200k per week. That’s in line with other stars at Bayern – they can easily pay it.

“All I hear about this is that he’s not as expensive as expected,” said Plettenberg. “We talk about a transfer fee less than €50m and we speak about a salary around €12m and €15m per year. This is payable for Bayern Munich.

“These are salaries they’re paying for [Lucas] Hernandez, for [Leroy] Sané, for [Robert] Lewandowski, for [Thomas] Muller, for [Manuel] Neuer.

“Now the question is what the player wants.”

Plettenberg went on to say that Bayern feel confident about getting this one over the line.

Sadio Mané and his wage demands

We’ll be pretty devasted if that’s the financial package that gets Mané. £40m just isn’t decent value for a player this good, while £200k per week feels like an easily payable sum for Liverpool.

Hopefully, this is just nonsense speculation because we expected Mané to have quite high wage demands. That would at least explain why there’s any hold up in the negotiations as Liverpool try to secure a new contract.

The Reds could easily get £200k per week of value out of Mané over the next few years. He’s only just turned 30 and his fitness levels suggest that he’s got more years in him. Especially as his form this season is arguably the best of his career.

We’ll have to see where this one goes. But if it ends up being a £40m move to Bayern on £200k per week, there will be serious questions asked at Liverpool.
