'Why would you not?': Neville says Liverpool should definitely try to sign 'unbelievable' player this summer

Gary Neville thinks Liverpool should try to sign Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen during this summer’s transfer window.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville said he didn’t see any reason why Liverpool wouldn’t be interested in the Dane.

“I think Eriksen will get plucked by a big club,” said Neville. “He might show loyalty (to Brentford) over what they have done for him. If you were any top-six club, that were looking at a midfield three, and you wanted a player to go in there and play 30 games for you in a squad-type (role).

“He could play for Man City, Liverpool and for any club in the top-six. I am not saying starting every week. What Shaqiri was doing for Liverpool.

“If Liverpool are looking for a midfielder to come on for Thiago, say, who gets injured a little bit, why would you not look at Eriksen? Look at him for two seasons to do a job for you. He’s a brilliant pro. Great player. His quality on the ball is unbelievable – some of Eriksen’s passing in that game (v Man United) was out of this world.”

Eriksen shows he still has plenty to offer

It’s an interesting idea from Neville. For all who have watched him for Brentford this season, it’s clear that Eriksen is still a quality player.

Of course, his health scare last summer has been well-documented. Had it not been for that, he would have been playing Champions League football for Inter Milan this season.

Eriksen is still only thirty and is, as it stands, a free agent this summer. As Neville says, it remains to be seen whether he shows loyalty to Brentford for giving him a way back into the game.

If he chooses not to though, he has shown that he could be an option for plenty of teams with higher ambitions.

A good stop-gap for Liverpool?

Liverpool are potentially in the market for a midfielder. Ideally, that would be a player much younger than Eriksen who could be a first-team option for many years to come.

However, it looks like Liverpool could be turned down by their reported first-choice target Aurelien Tchouameni. Interest looks to be there in Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, but he seemingly won’t be on the market until next season.

In the meantime, it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to take a gamble on Eriksen, even if just for a year or two.

The Denmark international has proven his fitness and quality in the second-half of this season. In fact, he was probably the difference between Brentford staying up and going down.

In that sense, he has already paid his debt to the Bees. It’s time for him to properly reignite his top-level career, he could again be a shrewd, shrewd signing for someone.
