Report: Player Liverpool had as a priority transfer finally set to leave his club after value plummets by £41m

Houssem Aouar is set to leave Lyon this summer, according to reports. It comes two years after Liverpool were high on the player.

This comes from RMC Sport in France. They claim that Houssem Aouar is likely to leave Lyon this summer as he enters the final year of his contract. Teams line up to sign him, too, with Premier League and La Liga sides hoping to pick the playmaker up.

Aouar was once one of the hottest properties in Europe but no club pulled him away from Lyon. A couple of fairly disappointing years dramatically reduced the interest in him, however, and it’s now thought that he’ll leave on the cheap.

Foot Mercato quote a price of around £13m for Aouar. That’s a fairly incredible £41m price drop compared to the £54m quoted two years ago.

Liverpool were one of those who supposedly love Aouar back in 2020. The Mirror claimed he was a priority target that summer alongside Timo Werner. The pandemic, however, stopped the Reds from moving early in the window and plans changed.

But they supposedly scouted Aouar for years as they considered a move, per the Liverpool Echo. Here was a player that seemed quite high on Liverpool’s shortlist – they just never really made a proper move for him.

And to be fair, it was easy to see why Liverpool liked him. Aouar was fantastic back in 2020, thriving with Lyon and looking like a potential superstar.

Fast-forward to 2022 and Liverpool simply don’t need a player like Aouar. They’ve got young talent as attacking midfielders, while he’s no longer good enough to make their first XI. Even for £12m, a move seems like a waste of time at this stage.

We’ll watch where things go from here with intrigue, though. Aouar could have been a Liverpool player in a different world. Instead, he’s destined for what looks like a fairly off-the-radar transfer.
