Liverpool could still sign Aurélien Tchouaméni after a reported change of plans turned things in their favour. The Reds remain in talks.
Liverpool’s Aurélien Tchouaméni pursuit appeared to take a death blow this week. Both the Liverpool Echo and RMC Sport reported that the Frenchman had informed the Reds that he wished to join Real Madrid instead.
It wasn’t exactly a shock. We expected Real to prioritise Tchouaméni’s transfer after Kylian Mbappé rejected them – they need to make a statement somehow, after all. Liverpool would pay the price for that.
Or at least, it seemed that way. Now RMC Sport and Foot Mercato report otherwise as this transfer story has taken a twist. Both outlets claim that AS Monaco have raised their asking price, with the latter saying it’s now at around £85m.
That’s a dramatic increase from the £60m they wanted before, per AS. And it’s something that should benefit Liverpool.
Liverpool can still sign Aurélien Tchouaméni
That AS report is the interesting thing here. They said at the time that Real didn’t actually want to pay £60m for Tchouaméni as they don’t see that kind of value in a defensive midfield player. It’s the kind of money they’d rather spend on a forward.
We assume the Mbappé rejection changed their stance slightly as they looked to find a notable signing. However, we assume there’s a limit to that. If Real thought they were paying over the odds at £60m, they’ll see £85m as a staggering amount.
They might even see it as an overpay.
Paris Saint-Germain are the wildcard here. RMC Sport say this price rise has happened because they remain involved but reports have always claimed that Tchouaméni only wanted to move to England or France. That hands an advantage to Liverpool – if they can get closer to that asking price, they can usurp Real here.
They apparently remain in talks with Monaco so who knows? We thought this one was over but it seems Liverpool hang onto a chance here.
