Jamie Carragher gave his reaction to Liverpool falling just short on the Premier League title earlier today. The Reds did all they could.
Liverpool fell remarkably short of the Premier League title on Sunday, despite their 3-1 win at Anfield over Wolves. The Reds went into the final day knowing that no matter what they did, Manchester City must lose.
And that was a big ask. City don’t tend to drop points, after all – and especially at home. The disappointment, then, comes from the fact they were 2-0 down with 15 minutes to go.
Aston Villa, an actual top-flight professional football team, managed to concede three goals in five minutes, however. That put City back on top and made Liverpool putting Wolves to bed a non-event.
Jamie Carragher gave an immediate reaction to Sky Sports after Liverpool fell just short of the title. He summed things up nicely, really.
“You can feel the disappointment within the stadium,” he told Sky Sports. “I said before the game, that there’d be a party atmosphere in this place no matter what.
“I think the way things have unfolded today, which was very unexpected, was why it feels a little flat in here – the way City have won it.”
Jamie Carragher sums up Liverpool’s title failure
Yeah, this one hurts. As Carragher says, everyone was ready to celebrate today no matter what after a magnificent season. There wasn’t any expectation that City would drop points to Villa – just hope.
But when Philippe Coutinho go that second, the hope turned into belief. A five-minute spell – and we still can’t get over it being five minutes that swung this – was a dagger, though. Villa fell to pieces after conceding once, unfortunately, after doing incredibly well to get in front.
And so things felt very flat at the end of the game. Liverpool can still be proud of their efforts this season and it’s less that this was failure in the end. It just wasn’t to be.
