Tottenham Hotspur want to sign John McGinn, according to reports. He’s a player Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp rate highly.
The Telegraph report that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Aston Villa’s John McGinn this summer. He’s part of a planned summer overhaul at Spurs, with Antonio Conte hoping to reshape their squad.
And McGinn could help him do that. The Scot is actually a player Liverpool reportedly looked at last summer as he impresses Jurgen Klopp.
That’s according to the Athletic, who noted that Klopp once called McGinn a ‘super player’. The German went further than that, however, as he carried a transfer interest and asked Andy Robertson for an opinion on his compatriot.
One year on, though, it seems Spurs could be the ones to truly push for McGinn.
Tottenham want John McGinn
We wrote at the time that McGinn would make sense for Liverpool. He’s got bags of energy, is a well-rounded player and could easily play a role in the Reds’ midfield. Klopp has built a team that thrives on midfielders who can offer a bit of everything and, above all, energy.
But recent suggestions are that Liverpool have eyes on the market above McGinn. As good a player as he is, the likes of Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jude Bellingham are names linked with the Reds.
The Times have the Reds down as wanting Tchouaméni, Sport Bild mention Bellingham – both are in that top bracket of young midfielders right now. In fact, they’re two of the outright best young midfielders in the world.
So we don’t expect Liverpool to get involved for McGinn again. Perhaps there was a chance in the wake of Gini Wijnaldum leaving the club but not now. The Reds want to sign the next generation of superstars, it seems, and the Scot doesn’t quite fit into that bracket.
