'The most important': Jamie Redknapp says one Liverpool player should definitely be paid more than Mohamad Salah

Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Virgil Van Dijk should be the highest paid player at Liverpool, eclipsing Mohamed Salah’s wage demands.

The pundit was speaking to Sky Sports after covering Liverpool’s win over Southampton last night. When asked about The Reds contract negotiations with their players, Redknapp said that Van Dijk was even more important than Salah.

“I’m sure Mohamed Salah’s been offered a vast amount of money,” began Redknapp. “But sometimes you have to think “well, if we give him that much, what does Virgil Van Dijk want?”

“Now, I think Van Dijk’s the most important player at the club, I wouldn’t give anyone more money than him. I know strikers should get more in terms of that’s always been the way it is, but whatever Virgil gets, he should be on the most, he’s the most important one.”

The former Liverpool captain went on to claim that The Reds number 4 is quite simply irreplaceable. In Redknapp’s eyes, Jurgen Klopp could find another Mohamed Salah, but another Virgil Van Dijk would be impossible to unearth.

“They will find another Mo Salah, you can’t find another Virgil Van Dijk right now,” he claimed.

“Liverpool could theoretically, if they lost him (Salah), maybe go and get someone else to replace him. His goals, his numbers are unbelievable, but there will always be another great striker who comes to this cub, they’ve had so many in the past, they’ll have so many in the future.”

A team full of superstars where the superstar is the team

That there is debate about exactly who is the most important player in this Liverpool team is testament to two things: firstly, the absolute quality of the squad and secondly, Klopp’s focus on team over individual.

Looking purely from a numbers point of view, there is no touching Salah. He has been absolutely pivotal to any and all success that Liverpool have had since his arrival.

But players such as Van Dijk and Alisson have been equally as important at solidifying Liverpool’s defensive efforts.

In the middle of the pitch, Fabinho’s steel is absolutely crucial to allowing Liverpool to attack with such numbers. Jordan Henderson’s engine, quality on the ball and relentless winning mentality are the platform on which Liverpool build.

Thiago Alcantara is potentially the best footballer in the squad, and what about the other-worldly output of the Liverpool full-backs?

That’s before you even mention the contributions of Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino and now Luis Diaz.

The highest compliment that you can give Klopp is that he has assembled a team of superstars who still manage to be greater than the sum of their parts. A truly special team.

It depends on your point of view whether you think Van Dijk is more important than Salah. Maybe you think Trent is more important that Mane, or Alisson more crucial than Fabinho. At a club where Steven Gerrard was pretty much the undisputed key man every year for a decade, it just shows how far we’ve come.
