'By a mile': Gary Neville claims Liverpool's £10m man is now even better than Joao Cancelo

Gary Neville has claimed that Liverpool’s Andy Robertson is now the best full-back in the league in England.

Adding Robertson to his Team of the Season via Football Daily, Neville said that the Liverpool man was even better than Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo.

“I absolutely love Cancelo, I couldn’t love him anymore, but I can’t ignore Robertson,” he said.

“The best full-back in the league for me, by a mile, in that he does both things incredibly well. This is not Mr Steady, six and seven’s out of ten, this is eight and nine’s out of ten, every single week.

“The impetus that he gives Liverpool down that left-hand side when it matters, in games where its hurting, he is unbelievable. He does more than I think you would ever notice.”

A slightly surprising take maybe from Neville, but one that it’s really difficult to argue against. The only one who comes even remotely close to him is the chap on the opposite side to him at Liverpool.

A tale of two left-backs in the cup final

On another day, Robertson could have been the match-winner for Liverpool in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

The 28-year-old had two really good opportunities when arriving at the back post. Robbo must have thought he had won it when he latched onto James Milner’s superb delivery from the right-hand side. But the post denied him what would have been a famous goal.

In the end, it was the man who replaced him who wrote the headlines. Kostas Tsimikas stepped in as Robertson went down with what looked like cramp towards the end of extra-time.

For some, Tsimikas’ heroic turn coming off the back of Robertson’s big chances missed may be a sign of things to come. The Greek has been excellent when deputising for the first-choice this season and could have had more minutes.

Klopp trusts Robertson implicitly though. The player has run through brick walls for him and has been one of Liverpool’s most reliable players since arriving for a fee of up to £10m five years ago.

There’ll be no doubt in Jurgen’s mind that Robbo will be the man to turn to in Paris at the end of the month. And so he should be. Even as he ticks slowly towards his thirties, Robertson shows no signs of slowing down.

Without the presence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, there would be no question that Robertson is the best full-back in the league. Only Leighton Baines has more Premier League assists as a defender, and Robbo is closing in on that too.

Sometimes he doesn’t get the plaudits he’s due, but Klopp and the Liverpool supporters know just how valuable he is.
