Tom Sherwood just had to applaud a moment from Luis Diaz in Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa last night. The Colombian produced magic.
Liverpool scrapped and clawed their way to a 2-1 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park. Steven Gerrard’s side made this one about as difficult as can be, pressing the Reds high and proving relentless with their energy.
Villa took the lead inside three minutes, in fact, as they sought to overrun Liverpool early. Fortunately, Joel Matip found an equaliser soon after to level things again.
And from there, it was two sides harrying one another into errors to try and find an opening. Neither side managed to get what they wanted, however, until Sadio Mané headed home in the second half. That proved decisive as the Reds claimed three points and kept the pressure on Manchester City.
But it wasn’t just about Mané. Luis Diaz provided the cross for Liverpool’s goal, receiving the ball out wide and working an angle beautifully. His effortless delivery allowed the Reds’ no.10 to direct it home.
After the game, Tim Sherwood was full of praise for Diaz’s work.
“Luis Diaz’s cross was exquisite,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions. “How would you like to finish that one?
“What a cross that is. When he makes the run, Mings is further away because he’s too scared to get close to him. He picks his head up and drills it across the box.
“It makes your job easy as a striker.”
Luis Diaz shines for Liverpool vs Aston Villa
It’s every game now that Diaz produces something that makes you wonder how Liverpool got him for £40m. He’s quite clearly a world-class player and the Reds just snapped him up.

This is a player Manchester United supposedly said no to, after all. Diaz had the reputation of a player who could make the step up to a decent level one day but he’s quickly shown to be an elite forward for Liverpool.
For us, the hype looked legitimate before the Reds signed Diaz. We never expected him to be quite this decisive, though, and Liverpool are a better side with him in the XI right now. And that might mean a start in the cup finals coming up.
It probably should.
