'I'm so happy': Virgil van Dijk is absolutely thrilled that he can call Alisson a Liverpool teammate

Virgil van Dijk raved about playing alongside Alisson Becker for Liverpool this week. The Dutchman says his teammate is ‘incredible’.

You don’t have to go back very far to find a Liverpool team that couldn’t defend. 2017 would do it – the Reds lacked consistency or authority at the back. The entire game plan was ‘we’ll score more than you’.

Now, to be fair, that sometimes worked. However, it wasn’t going to lead to success, and a couple of signings in 2018 absolutely transformed Liverpool from an exciting team to a winning one.

Virgil van Dijk arrived that January, with Alisson Becker joining him the following summer. Suddenly, Liverpool boasted one of the best defensive units in the world.

Michael Owen recently talked about just how vital those two signings were for the Jurgen Klopp era. We’d throw Fabinho in there, too, as completing a defence that can compete with anyone in the world.

Praise for Van Dijk is everywhere, of course. The Dutchman himself took time to praise Alisson, though, making it clear that he’s ‘so happy’ to play with the Brazilian.

Virgil van Dijk praises Alisson

“I’m so happy and glad that he’s our goalkeeper,” Van Dijk told Premier League Productions. “The presence he has is incredible.

7 Footballers Who Were GENUINELY Irreplaceable

“The one v ones, the distribution – on the ball, he’s incredible. For modern-day football, it’s so important to have such a good goalkeeper.”

It’s always great to see Liverpool players praising one another. They do get to play with some of the finest in the world, after all, and Van Dijk certainly recognises that with Alisson.

The two of them are in the discussion for the world’s best in their respective positions and Liverpool fans are remarkably fortunate to see both at their club. The two of them cover just about every single elite detail about defending and we’re honestly not sure you could find a centre-back and a goalkeeper who suit one another more.

Their abilities to play from the back, to operate with a high line and their unreal composure helped transform Liverpool.
