Kostas Tsimikas has hailed Liverpool teammate Virgil Van Dijk as being the best defender he’s ever seen.
Speaking to EA Sports via Liverpool FC on Twitter, Tsimikas was asked how good Van Dijk has been this season.
“For me, he’s the best defender I saw with my eyes,” said the 25-year-old. “So big, so fast, so strong.”
Us too, Kostas. What a player Virgil is.
Virgil back to his best
In a season where Liverpool have a number of very strong candidates, Van Dijk can legitimately claim to have been The Reds Player of the Season.
The way he has bounced back from missing the whole of last year has been incredible. After looking a little tentative early on in the campaign, he soon found his rhythm. Once he did, he never looked back.
Van Dijk is, remarkably, on course to complete his best ever amount of games in a season for Liverpool.
In his two previous full seasons playing with the club (minus last year’s injury nightmare) he has played 50 games in each.
So far in 2021/22 he has played 48. Liverpool still have five games on the calendar and you’d bet on Van Dijk playing them all.
Unbelievably, that still wouldn’t be a career best for Virgil – he played 58 in 2014/15 as Celtic won the Scottish league title.
Regardless, it’s mightily impressive from the centre-back after such a devastating injury.
Should Liverpool win the big one in Paris at the end of the month, it could well see Van Dijk back in the conversation to win the Ballon d’or.
The 30-year-old was mightily unlucky to miss out by a handful of votes to Lionel Messi in 2019. If Liverpool manage to go all the way in Paris, he could deservedly be in with a shout.
