'People like that': Harvey Elliott shares why he wears the number 67 shirt for Liverpool

Harvey Elliott shared why he wears the number 67 for Liverpool this week. The youngster has a couple of reasons why.

Liverpool prodigy Harvey Elliott gave an interview to Soccer Bible this week where he discussed all sorts. One topic that came up, though, was his unusual squad number.

Elliott wears number 67 for the Reds, despite lining up in the first-team squad this season. Why exactly did he pick that one then?

“So I used to love players who wore the number 7 when I was a kid – Luis Suarez, people like that,” said Elliott. “I used to have my own shirt with 7 on the back.

Then when you sign at such a young age you don’t really get to pick from the lower numbers. 67 was just the next one available with 7 in it, so I thought, yeah, why not.

“At the same time I thought because I was kind of playing on the right-wing, and to have Trent as 66 then me as 67, I thought it looked quite good.”

Harvey Elliott: Liverpool’s no.67

Well, those reasons are about as good as it gets for wearing number 67. It does sound as though he might have his eyes on the ‘pure’ number 7 once James Milner moves on – which could well be this summer.

Milner’s contract expires, after all, and he’s yet to agree on a new one. It’s all very much wait-and-see as the veteran enters talks this week.

And handing no.7 to Elliott would certainly feel like a sign of intent. He’s one of the brightest talents at the club right now – possibly the very brightest – and handing him one of the club’s most legendary shirts would signal that.

Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Steve McManaman, Luis Suarez, James Milner – Harvey Elliott? It’s certainly the kind of company we dream of him keeping one day.
