'Don't understand the hype': Pundit compares Liverpool's Klopp to Manchester City's Pep Guardiola

Former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Didi Hamann compared Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola this week. The two managers are regarded as the world’s best.

Who is the world’s best manager right now? It’s an interesting discussion and one that centres almost entirely around Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. The two of them have dominated English football for the last few years – and arguably Europe, too.

Didi Hamann, who played for both Liverpool and Manchester City, gave his thoughts on the debate to T-Online this week. As far as he sees it, Klopp is clearly the manager with more merit.

“I don’t understand the hype surrounding Guardiola,” said Hamann. “Guardiola is without question a good coach; it’s just his record with Manchester City that doesn’t speak for him.

“He was brought in to win the Champions League, but in six years, he has only been to the final once – and he completely messed it up. Nevertheless, many observers in England speak of the ‘Godfather of Managers’. I can’t agree with that.

“See what Klopp has achieved with very limited resources compared to City. Klopp’s merit is incomparably higher.”

Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola

We think they’re two very different managers, even if their playing style ends up being quite similar. Klopp is all about building something at a club, while Guardiola looks to squeeze the most out of a team.

Liverpool, as a club that doesn’t compete at the top table for transfers, wants a manager like Klopp. He’s there to gradually add the right players to his squad and get them all moving in the right direction.

Guardiola, on the other hand, suits City. They want someone who can spend lavishly and design an unstoppable team – as he’d done at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. The Spaniard will give you a renowned team in an instant if you provide him the pieces.

Now obviously, we’d pick Klopp as the manager with more merit, as Hamann did. It’s honestly apples and oranges, though – they’re the two best in the world but for different situations.
