Jamie Carragher reacted with delight as Divock Origi scored for Liverpool against Everton on Sunday. The Belgian is likely off soon.
That’s now six goals in 10 Merseyside derbies for Divock Origi – it’s just a ridiculous record. The Liverpool forward thrives against the old enemy, finding ways to score in every which way.
Maybe it’s running in behind, maybe it’s getting on the end of a bicycle kick, maybe it’s capitalising on Jordan Pickford fumbling a shot going over the bar – Origi gets his goal and his moment. This time it was the bicycle kick, of course, as the striker settled the derby by heading in from close range late on.
Understandably, Jamie Carragher reacted with absolute delight at the goal as he did commentary for Sky Sports.
“Where do you want your statue, Divock Origi?” said Carragher. “His record against Everton deserves one – absolutely fantastic!
“You talk about Jurgen Klopp from the bench, the changes he’s made. His record against Everton is fantastic, you see that smile. I think Divock Origi doesn’t come on if this isn’t against Everton.
“I’m convinced Jurgen Klopp only brings him on because of his record against the nearest neighbours.”
Divock Origi for Liverpool
It was a glorious moment from Origi – but who’s surprised at this point? This is what he does. Big goals in big games right when Liverpool need them. He’ll settle a Champions League final, he’ll settle a derby, he’ll win you a game late on.
And it has to be said – this will almost certainly be his last Merseyside derby. Origi’s contract expires this summer and competition for places will likely force him out.
It’s a shame, of course, but he does deserve to have these moments on a weekly basis. Though, keeping him on the books just to play Merseyside derbies does sound temping…
