Two reports claim Liverpool have held talks with £33m winger, club desperate to hang onto him

Liverpool are looking to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, according to reports. It sounds as though this is a tough one, however.

Eindhovens Dagblad claim that Liverpool are in the mix for Cody Gakpo. It’s not a race they lead, however – Arsenal hold that place – and PSV Eindhoven really don’t want to lose their star player.

In fact, they harbour dreams of renewing his contract until 2027 in an attempt to see off all the interest. Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund all want the player, too, you see.

Another Dutch outlet, Voetbal International, name the same clubs as holding an interest in Gakpo. They go a little more specific, though, by claiming the likes of Liverpool have held talks with the player over a potential move – or at least, talks with his ‘entourage’.

PSV would also want around £33m in any sale, though again, they’d rather hold onto Gakpo beyond this summer. This isn’t a routine one, then.

Liverpool want Cody Gakpo

Gakpo has been in blistering form for PSV this season and there’s absolutely no surprise at all the interest. He’s bagged nine goals and 13 assists in the Eredivisie, primarily from the left wing,

The player also scored the winning goal for PSV in the KNVB Cup final against Ajax at the weekend – doing so as captain. That’s quite a remarkable feat for any player, let alone a 22-year-old.

Gakpo does feel like a special player, then, and one Liverpool could potentially turn into a star. It’s just debatable whether the Reds are in any position to sign him.

He’s a left-winger, after all, and Sadio Mané, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz all play there. It’s hard to see room for Gakpo and the likes of Arsenal can likely offer him regular first-team football that Liverpool simply can’t.

So even if £33m looks like a steal, we’re just not sure Liverpool can justify it – in 2022, anyway. Things could change in 2023 and Liverpool’s best shot at Gakpo appears to involve PSV getting their wish and keeping him for another year.

Hopefully, that happens as the youngster feels like a star in the making.
