‘Even the very best’: Graeme Souness on the Premier League games where Liverpool could slip up

Graeme Souness gave his thoughts to Sky Sports on where Liverpool could slip up in the Premier League this season. The rampant Reds have six games to go.

Liverpool went back to the top of the Premier League last night with a 4-0 win over Manchester United. It’s the first time since October that they ended a day there as the battle with Manchester City continues.

The Reds now have six games left to beat out City, meaning any slip from either side could be fatal at this point. It’s going to be tense and pressure-filled – continuing with Everton on Sunday.

But where could Liverpool conceivably slip up? Their fixture list is riddled with interesting games, even if the Reds walk into each as strong favourites. But fixtures with the likes of Wolves and Newcastle United look like potential banana skins, while who knows what Everton will put out there at the weekend?

Well, according to Graeme Souness, any of Liverpool’s remaining fixtures could see them slip – that’s just the nature of the Premier League right now.

“In this job, we’re usually asked ‘where can they slip up?’,” he told Sky Sports. “As we saw at the weekend with Spurs and Arsenal, the big teams can slip up at any time. Even the very best can slip up in games you wouldn’t think.

“For Liverpool, they’ll only be thinking of one game at a time.”

Liverpool in the Premier League

He’s right, even if it’s a fairly safe answer. Liverpool do go into every game as strong favourites but the chance remains for them to drop points. They’ve already dropped points to the likes of Leicester City and Brighton this season, after all.

It’ll certainly be a shock if Liverpool do fail to win any of their games but at the same time, winning six more on the bounce is a big ask. The other side of the coin is obvious, though – it’s the same for City.

This title race could go either way and it’ll take a shock result from one of the sides to swing it.
