‘It’s tough’: Liverpool player admits things are far from simple for him at the club right now

Mohamed Salah says being at Liverpool right now is ‘tough’. The forward complains of too many distractions around him.

Mohamed Salah gave an interview with ESPN Brasil this week where he talked about his current status with Liverpool. It’s a relatively unclear one, after all – the Egyptian’s contract expires in 2023 and he’s yet to agree on a new one.

“Mentally I have to be focused, concentrated,” said Salah. “I know what I want, how professional I am. The most important thing is to focus on the team. The directors are happy, the teammates too. Everyone is happy, I am happy.

“It’s hard to concentrate, but it’s not difficult. Because I know how to stay focused. But it’s tough.

“There are too many distractions, too many people talking about everything. The team was fine while I was at the African Cup of Nations, but they were like, ‘How much will you be there? When you come back?”

It is difficult for Salah right now – that much is clear. He can’t 100% focus on football as he gets questions about his future at every turn.

And then there’s his form on the pitch. Salah hasn’t scored from open play since February 19th. It’s a staggering run and one that looked impossible at the start of the season.

But that doesn’t mean he’s playing badly. We thought Salah was excellent against Manchester City on Sunday, even if he struggled to find a path to goal. It was the kind of performance that showed his true value to Liverpool – even without the goals, he’s a decisive player.

It was also a reassuring display. As Salah says, things are ‘tough’ right now as he figures out his future. But the fact that he can still find ways to deliver in amongst the distractions is a wonderful thing. It’s certainly not easy.
