Journalist says Liverpool are ‘huge competition’ for £20m 25-year-old, backs up a previous report

Liverpool are ‘huge competition’ in the race for Gleison Bremer, according to one journalist. The Reds appear to rate the Brazilian highly.

Journalist Marco Barzaghi told his Twitch channel this week that Liverpool are firmly in the race for Gleison Bremer. Inter are in the lead as things stand but the Reds don’t appear to be giving up.

“There is an agreement in principle with the defender’s entourage [from Inter],” he said, per FCInter1908. “They still have to find the one with Torino.

“There is huge competition from English teams, Liverpool above all, in addition to the big Italians.”

This follows on from a report from Goal that claimed Liverpool wanted Bremer. Much like Barzaghi, they believe Inter lead the charge for the defender but it’s certainly not over and done with.

Liverpool want Gleison Bremer

There have been links between Liverpool and Bremer for some time now. We covered them back in January 2021, for instance – the Reds’ interest has always been consistently reported.

We’re just not entirely sure why, admittedly. Things made a lot of sense back in early 2021 as the Reds were in the midst of a defensive crisis. They also only had three senior centre-backs on their books and signing another one was the priority.

That’s no longer the case, with Ibrahima Konate arriving ahead of this season. There are now four elite centre-backs on the books as Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are all still around.

Thus paying the £20m price for Bremer seems like a strange one. In fact, the only way it possibly makes any sense is if someone moves on, presumably Gomez.

Bremer is now 25, after all. He’s a player entering his prime years and not someone you’d sign to sit on the bench for the majority of the campaign. The consistent talk tells us there is something in this – but we’re certainly surprised.
