Jamie Carragher says Thiago is the one Liverpool player who can match Kevin De Bruyne. The Spaniard brings something different.
Jamie Carragher believes Thiago is the one player at Liverpool who can ‘compete’ with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne. The Reds’ legend spoke to Sky Sports ahead of today’s game with Manchester City, discussing the midfield with Gary Neville.
As Neville pointed out, Jurgen Klopp went with a very experienced trio. Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago formed the centre of the team, with the former Manchester United man wondering if that was the way to go. There’s plenty of know-how, yes, but are they tricky enough to battle what City bring?
Carragher believes doing so is the role of Thiago – the one player at the club who can compete with Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne.
“His role with Fabinho, since he came into the team – I think they’ve started 12 games together and won 12 – I think he just adds something Liverpool haven’t had over the last three or four years,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“He can almost compete with a Bernardo Silva or Kevin De Bruyne in terms of getting on the ball.
“So it’ll be interesting to see his role today.”
Thiago vs Kevin De Bruyne
Klopp tried to give his midfield a bit of everything at the Etihad. There’s the defensive presence of Fabinho, the energy and pressing of Henderson and that technique in Thiago.

And you need that to compete with De Bruyne, in particular. He does the lot with the ball and scored the opener against Liverpool.
But in terms of opening teams up, Thiago is unquestionably Liverpool’s answer to the Belgian. The Reds’ winning record with the Spaniard shows that and he’s truly slotted in as a key player this season.
A sensational player and one who does add a different dimension to the side.
