‘He’s so clever’: Richards just had to applaud what he saw ‘top’ Liverpool player do earlier today

Micah Richards had to applaud what he saw Liverpool striker Diogo Jota do against Manchester City earlier today. Jota scored the Reds’ first equaliser.

Diogo Jota actually had a mixed game for Liverpool against Manchester City. His linkup play was a little off and there were a few frustrating passes and touches from the no.20.

But there should be no doubts as to why Jurgen Klopp picked him to start at the Etihad. Jota scored Liverpool’s first equaliser, capping off a brilliant move.

Thiago sent the ball out to Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right flank. He found Mohamed Salah on the edge of the box, who tried to find Jota with a little chipped pass in behind. It didn’t come off but Liverpool recycled possession out to Andy Robertson.

The Scot whipped a cross to the back post for the waiting Alexander-Arnold, who excellently picked out Jota in the middle. The Portuguese forward had somehow found space in a crowded box and he finished as expected for 1-1.

Jota’s movement caught the eye of Micah Richards, who told Sky Sports that it’s the difference between being a top player and an average one.

“I just think with Jota, though, if you look at his movement,” said Richards. “I think he’s scored 21 goals in all competitions this season.

“Everyone goes towards the ball – he’s so clever – he waits and finds where the space is. That is the difference between the top strikers and an average striker – finding where the space is when everyone runs in. Perfect goal.”

Diogo Jota for Liverpool

As we say, we’re not sure Jota had the perfect game here but he is such an exceptional poacher that he’s got to be in the team. This was a fine example of just that. Jota made the first run into the box, couldn’t quite get there, but immediately set about finding the space for the second ball.

It’s been said time and time again by this point but it truly is remarkable how Jota has transformed at Liverpool. He’s gone from being a direct, pacey winger to an out-and-out goal poacher – and a world-class one at that. A fantastic player and one that just has to play right now.

He brings goal, reliably and against all opponents. World-class.
