Liverpool may need to reconsider their reported interest in Antony after reports surrounding Manchester United. The Reds supposedly rate the Brazilian highly.

The Mirror reports that Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag has a shortlist of potential signings if he takes over at Manchester United, as expected. He wants to sort out the Old Trafford side as quickly as possible, it seems – and that might affect Liverpool.

One of the players he supposedly wants is Brazilian winger Antony. United are apparently ‘desperate’ for a right-winger and Antony fits the bill perfectly. Especially having built his reputation under Ten Hag at Ajax.

It’s a report that Liverpool won’t like very much, however. UOL in Brazil recently reportedly that the Reds want Antony for themselves and could look into signing him this summer.

United’s interest, then, comes at the worst time. Liverpool might need to move on from Antony.

Liverpool want Antony

Antony is a signing that actually makes a lot of sense for Liverpool. While they already boast several elite forwards, the Reds lack right-sided players. In fact, Mohamed Salah is really the only one.

And there are several doubts around his future, of course, as the Egyptian’s contract expires in 2023. Antony, as a youthful option there, could be the ideal replacement – be it immediately this summer or as a long-term fit.

But there is uncertainty over Antony’s potential role. He may only be backup until Salah leaves or starts slowing down and while that’s not a terrible position for a young player, it’s not ideal.

United, though, could offer Antony a starting berth as well as a manager he knows well. That’s tough for Liverpool to compete with – they may only stand a proper chance if Salah left the club. With him there, they can’t offer a regular starting role to Antony.

And so Liverpool may need to move on from this one if United truly are interested. They hold two advantages over the Reds that are tough to overcome. Certainly, while competition for places remains so high at Anfield.
