Mohamed Salah gave a brief update on his Liverpool contract talks this week. The Egyptian is unsure of his future.

Mohamed Salah gave an interview with Sky Sports this week that will be broadcast in full come Sunday. Sky have released some snippets, however, with the forward talking about his contract talks with Liverpool.

We’re sure you know the story by now. Salah’s deal ends in 2023, meaning he enters the final year this summer. Liverpool want him to sign a new one and, by all accounts, he wants to sign it, too.

But there are differences in demands. Salah appears to want massive wages, while Liverpool are unsure about paying such an amount to a player in his 30s. There’s not really an easy decision and at least one party must make a compromise. Potentially, a very expensive one.

“What can I say? There are many things people don’t know about it,” Salah told Sky Sports. “I can’t be selfish now and talk about my situation. We are in the most important period for the team.”

Now, we can’t really speculate on those things we don’t know about. We can’t even really begin to imagine what they are, in fact. What is clear, though, is that we’re not getting any major updates anytime soon as Salah makes it very, very clear that contract talks are a distant thought right now.

“I can’t say yes, I can’t say no,” he went on to say. “I can’t really go deep into the contract now because it’s a sensitive situation.”

It’s a strange one. Deciding Salah’s future is a massive moment for Liverpool and their short-term success. It really does have to take a backseat, however, as it’s huge game after huge game for the rest of the campaign.

On top of that, Liverpool need Salah firing on every cylinder – something he hasn’t really done lately. Limiting distractions feels key and the contract is certainly one of those.

And so the update is that, quite deliberately, there is no update. Liverpool and Salah won’t be discussing contracts for the next little while – so everyone should prepare to get nervous.
