Rio Ferdinand has hailed Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold as the best passer on the planet after his display against Benfica on Tuesday.
Speaking to BT Sport last night, the pundit was full of praise for Trent’s display the previous evening.
“He’s as good a passer as anyone on the planet right now, I don’t care,” said Ferdinand. “From right back he’s coming inside the pitch a lot now but this pass when I saw this yesterday I was screaming, and it’s not normally passes that do that but I was like ‘oh my God!”
The former Manchester United defender was referring to Trent’s delightful ball which allowed Luis Diaz to lay a goal on a plate for Sadio Mane. Ferdinand couldn’t believe how the Liverpool man saw the pass so quickly.
“It’s out of order the way he passes the ball, how’s he seen that that quick?”
Joe Cole was in agreement that Alexander-Arnold is one of the best passers around. Cole claimed that the right-back is an even better striker of the ball than the legendary set-piece king David Beckham.
“It doesn’t need words. It’s Beckham like but I think he’s actually a better passer than Beckham, a better crosser than Beckham and that’s saying something because he’s the best I’ve seen in my generation,” said Cole.
High praise for Trent and all of it so very richly deserved too – the 23-year-old is getting better and better in a Liverpool shirt.
Trent’s generational talents
The plaudits have been coming thick and fast for Alexander-Arnold in recent days and rightly so.
Alan Shearer echoed Ferdinand’s comments and even went one better, saying the Scouser would be seen as the best set-piece taker in Premier League history in ten years time.
When you see passes like the one that caught Rio’s eye on Tuesday, that prediction looks like being a good one.
It’s easy to become blase about the quality of Trent’s ability to spot and execute outrageous passes. But it really become clear just how good he is when watching other teams. No one is doing what Alexander-Arnold is doing in his position.
