Liverpool are closing in on a deal to bring Derry City youngster Trent Kone-Doherty to Anfield.

That’s according to 90min who claim that the 15-year-old is set to follow Celtic winger Ben Doak in signing for Liverpool.

The report claims that Kone-Doherty had interest from elsewhere. Manchester City and Manchester United were reportedly ‘in contention’ to sign the player. Meanwhile, Celtic were also ‘pushing to take him.’

But Liverpool look to have won the race, with a deal now ‘being finalised’ with Kone-Doherty.

Liverpool bolster their ranks

As Kone-Doherty is only fifteen, it will be some time until Liverpool see whether this move will pay off or not.

But it’s great to see the club moving decisively to secure the signings of some promising young players.

Because he’s so young, there’s not too much footage available for Liverpool fans to be excited about with Kone-Doherty. But the Derry City man has amazingly already been on the bench for the first-team.

According to The Athletic yesterday, Doak’s move is now all but complete, too. Liverpool will reportedly beat Leeds United to the signing of the Scot.

That means that The Reds have hopefully added two hugely exciting wingers to their ranks before the summer window is even open.

What it means for the futures of those already plying their trade in the U-18’s squad remains to be seen.

It may not be the best news for the likes of Mateusz Musialowski. However, the young Polish winger is a couple of years older than the new pair and should be further ahead in his development.

Brexit rules mean that youngsters like Musialowski from the EU can no longer be signed until they’re 18-years-old.

That may mean we see more British and Irish talent poached by Liverpool in the coming years.
