Liverpool star Mohamed Salah had to be given a security escort to leave the pitch after Egypt lost to Senegal on penalties last night.

In a video posted by Kora Plus, Salah can be seen being protected by security as fans flock to the pitch at the end of the game.

A distraught looking Salah is led down the tunnel as a number of fans wearing Senegal shirts run on to the playing surface.

According to Kora Plus, there were also water bottles being thrown in Salah’s direction as he left the pitch.

Not what you want to see at all.

Mo misses out

The game itself finished 1-0 to Senegal after Boulaye Dia scored early on. That cancelled out Egypt’s 1-0 win from last Friday and took the game to a penalty shootout.

Three Egyptian players, including Salah, missed their penalties. It was then left to Liverpool’s Sadio Mane to score the winning penalty and send Senegal to Qatar.

It comes less than two months after Mane’s penalty won the AFCON trophy for Senegal. Salah was also left on the losing side on that occasion and now has to stomach another disappointment at the hands of his Liverpool teammate.

Having been drawn against the continent’s strongest team, Egypt were always second favourite to get through.

But it is a real shame for Africa and for football really, that only one of the continent’s best two player’s would earn a spot in the tournament.

Mane’s Senegal have the potential to go further in the World Cup and also boast the bigger names in their squad.

However, Salah is arguably the greatest player on the planet at present. When the biggest tournament in the sport comes around, you always want to see the biggest players there.

Mo will be 34-years-old by the time he has another chance to make it to a World Cup. After having the last one ruined by injury after a sensational debut season for Liverpool, you can’t help but feel for him.

Hopefully he can put the pain of losing out for his country again to one side and lead Liverpool to a glorious end of the season.
