Roberto Firmino now has a vital role to play at Liverpool after this international break. The Brazilian simply must play.

Liverpool boast the best selection of forwards in world football right now. They have five sensational options, virtually all of whom can play at least two positions across the forward line.

Jurgen Klopp can be flexible with them, too. Maybe he plays a traditional forward three, perhaps he uses a False 9, he can go 4-2-4 or 4-2-31 – whatever he feels works best in-game. It’s a wonderful situation for Liverpool and that kind of depth can carry them to more trophies this season.

But Klopp must manage things correctly over the next few weeks. Four of his five are off playing massive international fixtures as they try to qualify for the World Cup. Diogo Jota is busy scoring for Portugal in the European Play-Offs, Luis Diaz is scoring for Colombia and both Mohamed Salah & Sadio Mané are competing against one another in Africa.

That leaves one – Roberto Firmino. He didn’t make the Brazil squad for this international break and has the time off. We think that makes him the most valuable forward of the lot.

Roberto Firmino – key to Liverpool

Liverpool have an unbelievably intense period coming up. They return to action against Watford next week and then travel to Portugal against Benfica the following Tuesday.

Manchester City wait at the Etihad after that, with the return leg against Benfica three days later. Then there’s an FA Cup semi-final against City at Wembley (ridiculously) to follow.

It’s a lot coming out of the international break and Firmino being fresh is a God-send. He’s the one option who can play comfortably with everyone else, given the rest are comfortable on the wings. But the Brazilian is also the one who sacrifices to make the others better with his movement and pressing.

That’s exactly what Liverpool need as Klopp tries to rotate tired legs. He’ll have a fresh, consistent option who will put in all the necessary work to make things easier for the rest.

Ian Wright labelled him ‘elite’ earlier this month and that’s exactly what Firmino is. An elite player who improves the entire team whenever he’s on the pitch.

Klopp simply must pick him over the next few weeks – he could be a difference maker.
