Manchester United reportedly want Liverpool target Ryan Gravenberch. The Reds face a fight to win this race.

The Athletic report that Manchester United have scouts watching Ryan Gravenberch. The Ajax youngster is expected to leave the club this summer, with Bayern Munich supposedly favourites.

But one other club linked with Gravenberch is Liverpool. Goal reported during the summer that the Reds had eyes on him and, given his performances this season, we can’t imagine they’ve cooled on the idea.

If Gravenberch truly is leaving Ajax this summer, Liverpool will surely get involved. He’s a young midfielder but with decent Champions League experience. His all-action style slots nicely into the Reds’ system, too, and the Dutchman could replace Jordan Henderson or Thiago long-term.

This will be an almighty fight, though. United could end up being major favourites.

Liverpool can still sign Ryan Gravenberch

United aren’t just looking at one person from Ajax, of course. As the Athletic say, they’re also considering Erik Ten Hag to take over as manager this summer.

That could be a massive advantage in any race to sign Gravenberch. Not only can they increase his pay but also put him with a manager who he knows gets the best out of him. Being so young, too, he can afford to sit a year out of the Champions League if United, as expected, miss out.

But we still think Liverpool can win this race. Liverpool’s development record is so brilliant at the moment that they should be the right move for just about any player. Gravenberch can move to Anfield expecting to become a better player – that’s certainly not the case at Old Trafford.

Liverpool’s current setup in midfield should also entice any youngsters. There’s experienced quality to learn from in Henderson, Thiago, Fabinho and James Milner. Then the likes of Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones give Gravenberch obvious teammates to develop with.

We think that’s an exciting future – if he wants it. United will be fierce competitors in this race – and we haven’t even got on to Bayern – but Liverpool have so much to shout about that they can feel confident about Gravenberch.
