Curtis Jones could see his presumed role at Liverpool under threat with talk of interest in Gavi. The Scouser shouldn’t be counted out, however.

Spanish journalist Gerard Romero believes Liverpool want to sign Gavi from Barcelona. He claimed on his Twitch stream that the Reds had made contact over an offer before backing that up on Twitter.

He says there’s a £5m-a-year deal on the table – if Gavi wants it. That latter part is up for debate, however. Mundo Deportivo also say that Liverpool are in the mix here but that the 17-year-old doesn’t particularly want to leave Barcelona.

Still, there’s a £42m release clause until June 30th, giving teams a shot at a bargain prodigy. If they can convince him, that is.

Liverpool appear to believe they can, if talk of this offer is correct. But with that, Curtis Jones will perhaps wonder what the immediate future holds.

Jones is unquestionably a progressive midfielder with star potential. Jurgen Klopp certainly believes so, labelling the youngster as someone with ‘incredible potential’ and the stats back that up.

But he’s not the only one. Harvey Elliott, too, is a young midfielder who looks potentially elite and a partnership between the two feels like the plan at Liverpool. They can each sit in front of a holding midfielder, one from the left and the other on the right, moving the team into dangerous areas.

If Liverpool want Gavi, however, is appears that the club maybe isn’t all-in on Jones. In fact, they’d almost certainly be downgrading his role as a potential starter – you don’t sign Gavi unless he’s your long-term plan in midfield.

Not that it’s the end of the world for Jones. He still clearly has a long-term place at the club and we can’t imagine there are any intentions to move him on. Even just as a fantastic squad option, Jones is a very useful member of the club.

But as a long-term starter? Jones may be losing that role before he’s even really had it. If Liverpool get their way with Gavi, of course. There’s still a long way to go on that.
