Chelsea’s plight could help send Ronald Araujo to Liverpool if reports are correct. The Reds supposedly want the player.
Chelsea aren’t exactly in a good state right now, as you may have heard. They’re essentially on a lockdown, unable to complete deals of any kind – and that’s very problematic.
For one thing, multiple defenders at the club are out of contract this summer. Chelsea can’t actually renew their contracts as things stand and it appears near-certain that they’ll depart for nothing at the end of the season.
One of those is Andreas Christensen. The Dane is not only one of the best defenders at Chelsea but at 25, represents a wonderful long-term future. It just appears that future could now be with Barcelona.
Sport claim a deal is close and Chelsea can’t really stand in the way of it. Christensen could be a Barcelona player very shortly.
And if that’s correct, we could well see Ronald Araujo at Liverpool.
Ronald Araujo and Liverpool
Liverpool have been consistently linked with Araujo over the course of the season. His contract expires in 2023 and Barcelona are struggling to find him a new one. The two, per Sport, are far apart on wages as the Reds wait in the wings.

Should Barcelona sign Christensen, Araujo leaving could become more likely. For one, the Catalonians won’t have quite the same desire to bump up their wage offer. They’d have their replacement, after all, while there will actually be fewer funds available to do so.
Thus Liverpool could pounce for the player Xavi considers ‘spectacular’. There’s an obvious partnership with Ibrahima Konate, for one thing, that could be something special. Joe Gomez’s future appears up in the air, too, and the club would want a replacement.
Perhaps Chelsea’s predicament speeds things up.
