Jurgen Klopp didn’t like how Liverpool started vs Inter at Anfield last night. The Reds’ boss put the blame on his players.
Liverpool are through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals – just. They actually lost at Anfield in their first home defeat for over a year.
Lautaro Martinez got the goal and what a goal it was. The Argentine beautifully cut across the ball to send it sailing past Alisson in a goal well worthy of winning any game. Fortunately, it wasn’t quite worth two.
Liverpool’s 2-0 win in Milan was enough to see them through regardless of defeat at home. That’s undoubtedly something to shout about, even if they didn’t quite perform to their best abilities here.
A large part of that was Inter being very, very good, of course. But Jurgen Klopp doesn’t want to use that as an excuse. In fact, he saw signs that Liverpool weren’t performing well inside the first 20 minutes at Anfield.
“So, the first 20 minutes I didn’t like our counter-press too much and that is something that is nothing to do with the opponent, that is only about us,” he said, per Liverpoolfc.com.
“The goal we conceded, we shouldn’t have conceded, even when the finish was really brilliant, but we could have done [things] different before.
“It is not that I’m the type of guy who now puts the finger in it and tells the boys that it was completely out of range or whatever.
“Things like this can happen, so again, you have to make sure you know about it and then you don’t do it again – or you just do it better next time.”
Liverpool through vs Inter

It really wasn’t the finest display Anfield has ever seen. It was enough, though, and that’s the important part here. Liverpool will be in the quarter-finals and there’s a very good chance that they get a kinder draw than Inter.
The Italians were brilliant over the two legs and seriously troubled Liverpool both home and away. As Klopp says, the Reds could perhaps have helped themselves a little better with that but they saw it out anyway.
Roll on the quarter-finals – and, hopefully, a stronger performance.
