Paul Merson backs Joe Gomez to reject any offers and stick with Liverpool

Paul Merson feels Joe Gomez will get an opportunity to leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window. He backs him to make the right decision, however.

Joe Gomez has had an up and down career with Liverpool – to say the least. He arrived without much fanfare but quickly found a role in the first team. Just as quickly, however, a serious injury kept him out for nearly a year.

Having slowly built himself back up, Gomez became a wonderful squad player under Jurgen Klopp. He then took advantage of injuries to be a regular as Liverpool won the Premier League in 2019/20 and over that period, few were better in England.

But once again, injury struck and Gomez missed the majority of last season. He’s now struggled to play at all – the England international has only featured 14 times this season with six starts.

And for a Premier League-winning centre-back, that’s quite shocking. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are all elite defenders, however, and Liverpool only play with two centre-backs. They can’t all play regularly.

Thus Gomez may face offers before long and Paul Merson feels it’s inevitable. He also thinks the right decision is pretty clear, though.

“Joe Gomez is another player who has been talked about a lot in recent weeks, with his lack of game time an obvious issue at the moment,” he told SportsKeeda. “He won’t be short of suitors and the decision will ultimately be his at the end of the season, but I do think he should stay at Liverpool.

“They are a really successful team and will compete on all fronts next season, so he will play enough games.”

It’s entirely understandable if a player as good as Gomez wants to be playing week-in, week-out right now. No one would begrudge him a move.

But we do agree with Merson – he’ll get games. On top of that, his future is obvious, should he remain fit. Both Van Dijk and Matip are in their 30s now and the latter, in particular, has a questionable injury record himself. Gomez, at 24, is the perfect age to take over long-term.

Even better, he’s the ideal partner for Konate. And so if Gomez is willing to stick around at Liverpool beyond the next transfer window, we think his future looks very bright.
