Divock Origi can earn himself another year at Liverpool with a good performance vs Norwich City tonight. The Belgian got the nod from Jurgen Klopp.

Jurgen Klopp named a relatively strong Liverpool XI vs Norwich City tonight. The boss knew full well he couldn’t exactly call on every star – not after 120 minutes on Sunday – but he still found enough depth to threaten the Canaries.

Alisson, James Milner, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones, Takumi Minamino, Diogo Jota, Divock Origi.

We’ve got to say that the forward three is the most notable here. There’s no Mohamed Salah, no Sadio Mané, no Luis Diaz nor Roberto Firmino. Yet it’s still a trio that looks good enough to deliver.

But it’s a particularly big game for one player, in particular – Divock Origi. The Belgian can earn himself a longer Liverpool career here.

Divock Origi on the brink at Liverpool

Origi is actually in the final year of his Liverpool contract, though it’s not straightforward. There’s an option in there, per the Athletic, that sees an automatic extra year triggered should he play enough games.

Now, getting those games is difficult. As we mentioned, there are a lot of elite forwards at Liverpool right now and that creates fierce competition for places. Origi isn’t actually as good as most of them, if we’re honest, but he does have something on his side.

Origi is the only out-and-out traditional striker in the squad. He’s physical, a natural finisher and plays at his best when leading the line. If he can show Liverpool the value of such a player, he’ll get enough games to trigger that extra year.

And what better game in which to do it? Up against Premier League opposition in a knockout situation. Origi can show Klopp and co. that he’s still capable of delivering against top-flight teams for the rest of the season.

If he does that, he may well get the nod – even just from the bench – in enough games before the season ends. Certainly, FA Cup progression helps, opening up at least one more game for him. But in showing an ability to put Norwich to the sword – and offer a different dynamic up top – Origi can extend his Liverpool career.

And tonight is the night to send that message.
