Liverpool supposedly want to secure a transfer for Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. The links appear to be well-received by his teammates.
Voetbal International in the Netherlands believe Liverpool want to sign Cody Gakpo. They’ve held ‘exploratory’ talks and appear to rate the PSV player highly.
And really, that shouldn’t be a big surprise. We’ve talked before about why Liverpool would hold an interest here – Gakpo is a very talented young player. At just 22, he leads the Eredivisie in both assists per 90 and combined goals and assists per 90. Together, he has 18 goals and assists in 18 games.
That will naturally bring about interest from elsewhere and Liverpool, with their love of creative wingers, will likely be near the front of any queue.
It’s not something that worries Gakpo’s teammates at PSV, however. In fact, they’re nothing but proud to see him linked with the game’s big guns.
“Of course, [the links] make us very proud,” Armando Obispo told Voetbal International.
“To be honest, I expected that he would become so good, but not that his development would go so fast that he could already show it at the Dutch national team. But we are on the pitch with him every day; we know what Cody can do.”
“Cody is having a good season, and we still have some way to go,” said Jordan Teze. “There are good things coming for him. It’s great that his name is being linked with big clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool.
“That’s an example of how we want it in the end.”
Liverpool look into Cody Gakpo transfer
The Eredivisie is a selling league now, of course, and players won’t be under any illusions that big talents stick around. Gakpo, as he continues to thrive, will almost certainly move on for a big fee.
The big question is whether Liverpool would need Gakpo right now. Luis Diaz just arrived, after all, and that fills a gap that the Dutchman may have slotted into.
But if Gakpo continues to shine, the Reds will surely look into a deal – he just ticks a lot of their boxes. We just think it might be another year before Liverpool can truly justify a move.
