Two Liverpool players made their way into the Carabao Cup Team of the Tournament, say the EFL. The Reds went on to win the competition.
Liverpool made history on Sunday as they won their ninth Carabao Cup, moving them back ahead of Manchester City as the most successful club in the competition. It was far from routine, however.
No one could score in 120 minutes against Chelsea and then everyone could in the subsequent penalty shoot-out. Well, everyone but Kepa Arrizabalaga – it took 22 penalties but Liverpool got their win.
That capped off what was a brilliant Carabao Cup campaign for the Reds. They used just about every player in the squad at one stage or another, handing opportunities to youth players and stars. Two of those players particularly stood out, it seems.
Liverpool pair in Carabao Cup Team of the Tournament
The EFL announced this week that two Liverpool players were in their Team of the Tourmanent. They use Whoscored.com ratings to get there, with a pair of Reds standing out in their respective roles.
The first isn’t all that surprising – Caoimhin Kelleher. He played all but one game for Liverpool, winning two penalty shoot-outs. This was essentially his breakout competition, in fact, establishing him as a serious option between the sticks.

After all, the Irishman has proven he can win trophies.
The other player? Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He didn’t actually play in the final but there’s no doubting the role he played. Oxlade-Chamberlain started three games in the tournament and came on as a sub in another.
One goal and one assist followed, while EFL.com points out that Oxlade-Chamberlain completed the third-most dribbles in the competition. A fully deserved inclusion for the midfielder.
We do want to highlight Takumi Minamino, though, who was a little unfairly snubbed here. His Whoscored rating of 7.11 isn’t great but no one really played a bigger role in Liverpool’s success. Four goals and an assist across five appearances is fantastic, including a last-minute equaliser to save the game against Leicester City.
