Kylian Mbappe remains open to the idea of joining Liverpool this summer.
That’s according to a report from Spanish outlet Sport. They claim that PSG’s victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday has given The Reds a boost.
It’s reported that having seen Madrid up close, the 23-year-old was less than impressed. Instead, Liverpool’s ‘sporting project’ and specifically the presence of Jurgen Klopp are said to be ‘attractive’ to Mbappe.
Here we go again
This rumour is one that just won’t go away. In the summer it had seemed inevitable that Mbappe would become a Real Madrid player.
PSG even rejected a mammoth bid of £137m from the Spanish side last August.
The player now looks virtually certain to leave on a free transfer once his contract runs out at the end of the season.
Throughout the Frenchman’s contract standoff, Liverpool have been consistently reported to be interested in signing him.
This is despite Jurgen Klopp previously labelling the transfer as being impossible.
“Okay, from a sporting point of view, there are not a lot of reasons to not sign him. What a player he is,” Klopp said in 2019 via talkSPORT.
“But it is about the money, of course. No chance. Absolutely no chance. Sorry for killing that story.”
You would think that would be that. But even with mere months left before Mbappe makes his decision, Liverpool are still being touted as a possible destination.
Why it (probably) won’t happen
As Klopp points out, from a sporting point of view the answer is an easy one.
Mbappe was fantastic once again for PSG on Tuesday night. His stunning last minute winner against his would-be employers led to his manager Mauricio Pochettino calling him ‘amazing’ via The Daily Mail.
But that goal, like so many of his others, came from driving in from the left-hand side.
Putting aside Sadio Mane’s own contract situation, Liverpool have just signed Luis Diaz to play there.
The Colombian has looked like an inspired signing so far and is only going to get better for Liverpool. At 25-years-old, he is a signing for the next five years.
If Liverpool were really planning on signing Mbappe, there is little chance they would have pulled the trigger on Diaz.
It’s great to see Liverpool linked with a player of the World Cup winner’s quality. But it is highly unlikely that we’ll ever see him in a red shirt.
